What Is a Podiatrist?

A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of foot and ankle problems. Following undergraduate school, the podiatrist receives his/her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree from one of nine (9) colleges of podiatric medicine, after that completion of four (4) years of intense medical studies. The doctor then does surgical residency training for a minimum of three (3) years. The podiatrist is trained in all facets of foot and ankle care including trauma, reconstructive therapy, diabetic foot problems, and sports injuries. Some of the more common problems treated by podiatrists include bunions, toenail pathology (e.g. ingrown, fungus), bone spurs, hammertoes, fractures, sprains, and heel pain.
